Consequently, the number of Japanese companies in Nigeria has increased steadily in the last three years from 32 in 2017 to 43 in 2020.

The Charge de’ Affairs, Dr. Elias-Fatile, disclosed this in a statement made available to Diplomatic Correspondents in Abuja.

Elias-Fatile stated: “Despite current challenges, we still have good news and reasons to celebrate. After the successes of the events in 2019, we were recording steady improvements in trade and economic relations between both countries prior to the outbreak of Covid-19. The indicators include the increase in the number of Japanese companies in Nigeria from 32 in 2017 to 43 today.

“As soon as the situation begins to normalise, we shall take steps to pursue Nigerian-Japan relations with vigour and resolute determination, through robust engagements in economic and trade activities. We shall continue to bolster the networks of trade and economic activities between relevant actors and stakeholders from both countries. We shall initiate, encourage and support new ideas to expand the scope of trade and economic activities between both countries.”

Elias-Fatile said the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) acknowledged that presently, Japan is No 5 foreign investor in Nigeria, and also among the top 10 investors in services in Nigeria; among the top 10 investors in solid minerals, the No 5 investor in oil refining and No 5 investor in real estate.

Similarly, he stressed that Japan is among Nigeria’s top 20 import partners and Nigeria’s top 20 export partners.

He noted that another indicator was the increase in the volume of trade and economic activities between both countries. Recent statistics issued by competent government agencies from both countries attest to this positive trajectory.

Elias-Fatile revealed that since April 2019, there had been significant increase in the applications for business and tourism visas to Nigeria, especially after the maiden edition of the seminar for Japanese companies and captains of industry, the business networking session for Japanese businessmen and their Nigerian counterparts on the sidelines of the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VII) in Yokohama, as well as other trade-related activities organised by the Embassy last year.

According to him, “Although we have not been able to build substantially on the gains we garnered in 2019, the Embassy is undeterred. We believe that Nigeria and Japan will overcome Covid-19 and come out of this challenging period stronger. Therefore, we look forward with great optimism to actualise the initiatives we have in the pipeline and consolidate on the achievements we recorded in 2019/20.”

He said both countries had commenced preparations for the 9th Session of Nigeria-Japan Special Partnership Forum (NJSPF), scheduled for June in Tokyo, but was postponed.

The Charge de’ Affairs explained that the NJSPF is a framework for regular consultations on matters of mutual interest between the two countries, adding that the forum was upgraded to the level of a bi-national cooperation at the 6th session held on 22nd and 23rd August, 2013, in Abuja.

Elias-Fatile stressed that the Japanese companies are engaged in different sectors of the economy, including power generation, transmission and distribution, agriculture, machinery, automobile, manufacturing, engineering, electronics, infrastructure, food and seasoning, medical and healthcare, among others, adding that some of them manufacture products locally in their own plants in Nigeria.

The Federal and state governments have been accused of doing little to address the over 20 million housing challenge confronting the country.
Dr. Victor Onukwugha, President/ Chairman of Council, Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN) said the poor implementation and non execution of public housing programmes both at the Federal and state levels have continued to create problem for the sector.
Speaking on Monday at the occassion to commemorate the World Housing day, Dr. Onukwugha said government is not comitted to affordable housing programmes.
To tackle housing decency in the country, AHCN in the State of the Nation said government needs to give tax rebates and other incentives for developers so as to engage in low income housing .
Onukwugha said, "our governments both at the Federal and state levels have done very little over the years to respond to social housing and address increasing housing deficit.
"Although there is no accurate statistic of Housing shortage in Nigeria, the usual quoted estimated figure has been in the range of about 20 million housing shortages. It is however worrisome that efforts put in place over the years to address these deficits have really yielded notable and anticipated result.
"The poor implementation and non-execution of public housing programmes both at the Federal and state levels based on the overall framework of the housing policy have continued to create problems for the sector.
"Social housing is virtually unattractive to our governments as there are no profound commitments to affordable housing especially at the Federal level."
He further called for strategic and holistic approach in the efforts towards addressing the country's housing deficiency, especially now with impact of covid-19 pandemic on the economy.
The association, he therefore said has "designed a programme to change ansbreberse the phenomenon of rural urban migration to urban rural migration by creating our flagship project of agric-village scheme in local governments where we shall be using agriculture to drive housing at local and rural level thereby creating job opportunity for millions of jobless youth across the country.."

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities have given reasons why it embarked on a 14-day warning strike from today.

The SSANU, in a statement on Sunday by its President, Samson Ugwoke, hinged its decisions on alleged inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, non-payment of the arrears of the national minimum wage and the failure of the government to pay the earned allowances.

The union also revealed that its decision was as a result of non-payment of retirement benefits to its members, lack of seriousness and delay by the government in the re-negotiation of the 2009 SSANU/Federal Government Agreement.

It alleged usurpation of the headship of the non-teaching units by academic staff members “in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures,” corruption in the university system and non-constitution of visitation panels for the universities in line with the laws and neglect and poor funding of state universities.

The statement said, “Following the recent directives from the National Universities Commission to Vice-Chancellors for the immediate resumption/safe reopening of universities, you are hereby directed to commence a 14-day warning strike effective from October 5 to 19, 2020.”

Ugwoke said that the strike was a prelude to a full-blown, indefinite industrial action if the grievances were not addressed by the government.

The letter earlier written by the Joint Action Committee on June 1, 2020, and signed by the Chairman of JAC and President of SSANU, Ugwoke and the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, had it mentioned their contentious issues, its intention to embark on strike immediately the universities reopen to press home their demands and urged the minister to act fast to avert the impending strike.

As Nigeria joins rest of the world to celebrates this year's Teachers’ Day, the Nigerian Union of Teachers said Covid 19 has placed greater burdens on teacher as there is need to them to improve their capacities.

The theme of this year’s celebration is, ‘Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future’. Every 5th October has been set aside as World Teachers Day.

The Secretary-General, NUT, Dr Mike Ike-Ene, said COVID-19 had placed greater burdens on teachers, adding that they needed to be more creative, resilience and innovative.

He stated, “This year’s theme clearly shows that the greater burdens of COVID-19 have been placed on teachers to build their capacity to be more resilience and creative, because teachers are the ones shaping society.

“If teachers have to lead in this COVID-19 period, we really need to show that we are professionals.”

“As a teacher, you should know more than the people you are leading. We need to have quality education and promote long term learning. Teachers need to be provided with more opportunities for regular training,” he said.

;
