Two factions of the African Democratic Congress clashed on Tuesday in Cross River state.
The violent clash according to the report prompted police intervention blocking the entrance to the venue where one faction was scheduled to hold a meeting.
According to sources, the clash was an intra-party disagreement, with no indication of involvement from the ruling party. Police personnel were deployed to maintain peace and order, and the Commissioner of Police has invited both factions for a meeting to resolve the issue.
The ADC has been experiencing internal conflicts, with recent incidents of violence and factionalism reported in the state. In a related development, the party’s national leadership is facing criticism for alleged bias and lack of transparency.
However, a reliable source in Calabar, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that it was a factional clash, not the ruling party trying to shut down the opposition, as claimed on social media.
He said, “It is an intra-party disagreement within the ADC in the state. Personnel of the Police Command have been deployed to the area to ensure peace, maintain law and order, and prevent any breakdown of public peace.
“At the moment, the two factions of the party are currently before the Commissioner of Police for an interview and dialogue aimed at resolving the issues and maintaining calm.”
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the development.
He said, “Members of the public are advised to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, as the situation is under control.”
