The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory to Nigerians residing in or visiting the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East.
In a press release signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Federal Government said it is closely monitoring the volatile developments in the region, particularly military actions reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran on locations in some Gulf states.
The Ministry warned that the heightened tension raises concerns about further escalation, urging Nigerian citizens in affected areas to exercise extreme caution.
The government outlined key safety measures for Nigerians in Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries.
It urged citizens to maintain constant vigilance and remain conscious of their surroundings at all times, particularly avoiding strategic locations such as military and government installations, which could become flashpoints.
Nigerians were also strongly advised to limit non-essential travel and movement until the security situation becomes clearer. The advisory specifically cautioned against attending large gatherings and public demonstrations during the period of uncertainty.
Additionally, the Ministry emphasized the importance of complying strictly with security and safety directives issued by local authorities, noting that cooperation with law enforcement agencies is critical to personal safety.
Citizens were further encouraged to stay informed through reliable international and local news sources, while remaining wary of misinformation and relying on official channels for accurate updates.
The Ministry disclosed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, along with missions in neighbouring Gulf countries including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on high alert to provide consular assistance and ensure effective communication with Nigerians in those jurisdictions.
The Federal Government reassured the public that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains its top priority, adding that it will continue to assess developments and issue further updates as necessary.
While expressing concern over the unfolding crisis, the Government of Nigeria called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and coexistence.
