The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The decision was made during a plenary session in Port Harcourt, on Thursday.
The impeachment process began in early January, citing alleged gross misconduct, including demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval. However, the process faced repeated legal and political hurdles.
President Bola Tinubu’s intervention is seen as a significant factor in the Assembly’s decision to halt the impeachment. The move aims to stabilize the state’s political scene and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Governor’s office has welcomed the decision, with Special Adviser Darlington Orji stating that the impeachment process lacked merit and would not succeed. The Assembly had previously insisted on proceeding with the impeachment, but the court had restrained them from doing so.

The development is part of ongoing efforts to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State, which has been fueled by a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
