Amidst anticipation of a cabinet reshuffle, an aviation expert, Engineer Joshua Keftin Amuga, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow current Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo to continue with the ongoing reforms in the industry.
According to Amuga, Keyamo’s extensive transformation initiatives requires continuity in other to sustain Nigeria’s aviation sector’s remarkable progress.
He stated in a release sent to our Correspondent that Keyamo’s leadership in the Ministry had been nothing short of exemplary, with series of awards and milestones in 2025 which underscores his impact.
Amuga said, “from hosting international events to securing prestigious recognition, his efforts have elevated Nigeria’s global standing in aviation.
“In the spirit of aviation politicking, fostering collaboration and drawing policy reforms, retaining him is essential for our nation’s continued assent”, he emphasized.
He also explained that since Keyamo’s appointment in August 2023, he has implemented reforms that have propelled the sector forward, adding that Nigeria’s adherence to the Cape Town Convention has boosted its aviation rating from 40% to about 80% clearing 98% of blocked airline funds worth $850 million and facilitating aircraft leasing opportunities.
“The council country now leads Africa in compliance with global aviation standards with improved safety and infrastructure”, Amuga pointed out.
He explained further that Keyamo’s influence extends to key institutions such as the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) in Abuja, securing support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for infrastructure and training, positioning it as a centre for specialized education.
Highlighting other reforms, Amuga said, “the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification under his oversight, enhancing air traffic management and efficiency, Deployment of Advance Airspace Management Systems Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B).
“Reforms at NAMA and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) include terminal upgrades, lighting improvements, and apron expansions.
“The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria has seen significant advancements, attaining Platinum Member status in the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS Programme, with upgraded simulators and expanded training programs.
Keyamo’s June 2024 visit to NCAT highlighted his dedication to decentralizing operations and improving facilities. Internationally, Keyamo’s diplomatic efforts have yielded results.
“His August 2025 visit to Boeing’s headquarters in South Carolina led to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Nigeria. At the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal in September 2025, he advocated for Nigeria’s re-election to the ICAO Council, presenting sectoral achievements to global delegates”, he maintained, among many other reforms.
“These accomplishments, from institutional reforms to international partnerships and well-deserved awards, demonstrate why Minister Keyamo must continue.
“His vision aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s aspirations for a world-class aviation industry. “As the reshuffle approaches, this endorsement highlights the importance of merit and continuity in key sectors”, Engineer Amuga stressed.
