The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), has concluded a two-day capacity-building programme for its drivers, aimed at strengthening road safety, professionalism, and technical competence.
The training, titled “Driving to Safety: Defensive Driving and Vehicle Handling Techniques,” was organised by ACCI’s Business Skills and Technology (BEST) Centre.
The training was designed to enhance drivers’ safety awareness while reinforcing ACCI’s commitment to staff development and responsible road use.
The programme brought together professional drivers under an intensive learning environment focused on best practices in modern driving and vehicle handling.
Speaking at the opening of the training, the Director of the ACCI BEST Centre, Dr. Tinuke Temitope, urged participants to remain attentive and fully engage with the sessions facilitated by industry experts.
She stressed that the practical application of the knowledge gained would not only improve their efficiency and professionalism but also significantly reduce road risks and accidents.
The training featured in-depth sessions on the fundamentals of defensive driving, emphasizing the critical roles and responsibilities of professional drivers.
Participants were reminded of their positions as ambassadors of their organizations, whose conduct on the road reflects institutional values and standards.
Key modules covered hazard recognition and space management, with practical guidance on identifying potential road dangers, anticipating the actions of other road users, and maintaining appropriate following distances under varying traffic conditions.
These sessions were complemented by hands-on discussions that addressed real-life driving challenges.
Further sessions focused on professional conduct and effective communication, highlighting the importance of discipline, emotional intelligence, stress management, and responsible behavior while driving.
Through case studies and interactive group discussions, participants shared experiences, asked questions, and applied newly acquired skills to realistic scenarios.
Overall, the programme equipped drivers with essential competencies in defensive driving, vehicle handling, hazard management, and post-incident response.
The blend of expert-led instruction and practical engagement strengthened participants’ safety consciousness and capacity to manage real-world driving situations effectively.
The training concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants, reaffirming ACCI-BEST Centre’s dedication to continuous capacity building, road safety advocacy, and the promotion of professional excellence within and beyond the Chamber.
