Police arrest mother, Edo nurse for selling baby N1.4m

The Police has arrested a woman, Martina Dachung, for allegedly selling her baby for ₦1.4 million in Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District in Edo state.

The Edo command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday as part of the command’s weekly operations.

She said the case was reported by one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor to the Uromi Division.

She said two other persons connected to the transaction have also been arrested.

The statement read, “On January 8, 2026, one Ebhomien Matthew Asibor ‘m’ of Uromi alerted the command after learning that a mother was allegedly involved in a child trafficking arrangement.

“Acting swiftly, operatives of the Iruekpen Divisional Headquarters arrested one Martina Dachung, the mother of the baby, who subsequently led officers to the arrest of one Matron Ighalo Grace of Eguavon Medical Centre, Uromi, and Oha Promise, all connected to the illegal transaction.

“The newborn baby boy was safely retrieved, and evidence of the monetary transaction of one million, four hundred thousand naira (₦1,400,000) was recovered. The suspects will be charged to court.”

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, assured residents that the command would continue its sustained onslaught against criminal elements until the state is rid of all forms of criminality.

He urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist the police in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of residents.
