Nigeria Reaffirms Historic Bonds With Haiti on 221st Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Republic of Haiti as the Caribbean nation marks its 221st Independence Anniversary.

Nigeria also used the opportunity to reaffirm shared historical bonds and Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s goodwill to the Government and people of Haiti on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people.

The message was directed to His Excellency Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship.

Ambassador Tuggar described Haiti’s independence anniversary as a historic and symbolic milestone, underscoring the country’s pioneering role in the global struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

He noted that Haiti’s emergence as the first Black republic to gain independence remains a powerful inspiration to nations across Africa and the African diaspora.

“Haiti occupies a unique and enduring place in world history,” the Minister stated, emphasizing that its revolutionary legacy continues to inspire generations in the collective pursuit of liberty, justice, and equality.

Nigeria joined Haiti in commemorating the landmark occasion and reaffirmed its solidarity with the Haitian nation, particularly as it continues efforts toward peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The statement highlighted the importance of unity, resilience, and inclusive governance as essential tools for addressing contemporary challenges and advancing national renewal.

The Ministry also emphasized the shared historical and cultural heritage between Nigeria and Haiti, rooted in common ancestry and values.

According to the statement, Nigeria remains committed to deepening bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic engagement, cultural exchange, and cooperation within multilateral institutions such as the United Nations and other international platforms, in support of global peace and development.

As Haiti marks another year of independence, Nigeria expressed its hope for enduring peace, economic recovery, and collective prosperity for the Haitian people.
