The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Arise News anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, describing it as a grievous loss to the Nigerian media community and the nation at large.
In a condolence letter addressed to the Chairman of Arise News, Chief Nduka Obaigbena, and personally signed by him, Idris said the news of the journalist’s passing came as a shock.
He praised Ms. Maduagwu as a vibrant broadcaster, a consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences within and outside Nigeria.
“I write to convey our deepest condolences to you and the entire ARISE News family on the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who by every account was a vibrant and dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond,” the Minister stated.
He further lamented what he described as the “heinous incident that cut down a promising young journalist in her prime,” stressing that her tragic death was not only a painful blow to her family and colleagues but also to Nigeria’s democratic and media landscape.
Idris assured that the Federal Government would ensure a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, with a view to bringing closure to the bereaved family and the media fraternity.
Extending his heartfelt sympathies, the Minister said:
“On behalf of the Federal Government, I extend our heartfelt sympathy to the parents, siblings, colleagues, and all who knew and loved the late news anchor. May God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
