The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally announced the commencement of political campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

According to a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the decision is in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities released earlier by the Commission.

Campaign activities by political parties are permitted to run from Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and will end at midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026, just two days before the election scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

INEC, however, stressed the need for all political actors to conduct themselves in accordance with the law. The Commission reminded political parties, candidates, and their supporters that Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022 expressly prohibit the use of abusive language, incitement, physical attacks, or the destruction of opponents’ campaign materials during rallies, processions, and meetings.

The electoral body further emphasized the need for fairness and equal access, noting that all parties and candidates must be given unhindered access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, rallies, and other political gatherings.

To prevent abuse of power, INEC cited Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, which prohibits the use of incumbency to confer undue advantage or disadvantage on any candidate or political party.

Reiterating its commitment to credible polls, the Commission assured stakeholders that it would enforce compliance with the law to ensure a peaceful and level playing field throughout the campaign period and during the elections.

The FCT Area Council elections, which are constitutionally held every three years, will determine leadership in the six Area Councils of the nation’s capital: Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.
