19 more groups have applied to be registered as political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission has said.
Consequently, this brings to 171 the number of groups seeking registration as political parties as at September 3 2025.
This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
Olumekun, while providing fresh updates on the matter of new political party registrations, revealed that since its last update, it has received 19 additional letters of intent.
The Commission noted that a shortlist of pre-qualified associations is being finalized for the next stage of processing, adding that recommendations from its review committee are ready for consideration.
INEC, however, expressed concerns about delays in the process, citing frequent changes to logos, acronyms, addresses, and interim leadership by some associations. In some cases, defections of key leaders to other associations or existing political parties have complicated the review.
“We wish to reassure the associations that the Commission will treat all applications fairly while urging them to assist the process by remaining consistent,” the statement read.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process, pledging to continue updating Nigerians on its activities through its official platforms.
