The Delta State Police Command have explained how the arrest of a girl with a stolen phone led to arrest of six members of a robbery gang in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

Members of the robbery gang were arrested on Aug. 26, by police operatives attached to the Ughelli Area Command, the spokesman for the Command, SP Bright Edafe said in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday September 2 in Warri.

Edafe said that the suspects were discovered to be the alleged masterminds of several robbery incidents in the state in the past one year.

Their arrest followed report of a robbery incident at the Ughelli Area Command.

The Commander, ACP Aliyu Shaba, upon receiving report of the robbery, swftly detailed his men to investigate and fish out the suspects.

“On Aug. 26, 2025, a man from Agbarho-Otor reported that he was robbed by a robbery gang at his residence, who carted away valuables including Television set.

“The Ughelli Area Commander immediately detailed operatives to investigate the report.

“An intelligence-led investigation led to the arrest of a girlfriend of one of the suspects, and a stolen cell phone was recovered from her,” he said.

Edafe said that the girl thereafter led the police team to the residence of her boyfriend where he was apprehended.

“Upon the arrest of the boyfriend, a search warrant was executed on his house, and the other exhibits stolen from the victim were recovered.

“The exhibits include: 65-inch Television set, four PlayStation and cell phones,” he said.

The police spokesman said that further investigation led to the arrest of the gang leader, who had been on the command’s wanted list, and four others members.

He alleged that the suspects were also involved in the 2024 robbery incident at the Western Delta University, Oghara.

Edafe added that the gang was also involved the robbery attack at Oroye Warehouse, where over 180 bags of rice were stolen.

The command spokesman said that two stolen vehicles were recovered from the suspects and they.will be prosecuted upon the completion of investigation.
