The newly inaugurated leadership of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) Tuesday solicited for strong collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) so as to improve local government elections across the country.

Mamman Nda Eri, Chairman of Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission and National Chairman of FOSIECON, requested for INEC support during a courtesy visit to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Eri who recently tookover the leadership of the forum said the visit aimed at renewing ties and seeking INEC’s support in three key areas: technology, capacity building, and knowledge sharing to ensure more transparent and credible elections at the grassroots.

He said: “The new leadership of FOSIECON is focused on deepening electoral integrity, promoting transparency, and enhancing synergy with INEC. We believe that a more coordinated and collaborative relationship between INEC and the SIECs is essential for the consolidation of democracy, particularly at the grassroots level.

“Our commitment is grounded in the belief that credible local government elections are fundamental to democratic development, and that SIECS, with proper support and alignment, can deliver electoral processes that meet national and international standards.

“We are confident that with INEC’s guidance and partnership, the SIECS can play a stronger role in deepening democratic values and participation at the subnational level.

“This visit is more than a courtesy; it is a reaffirmation of our shared mandate and mutual interest in advancing credible electoral processes throughout Nigeria.”

He added: “We are here to respectfully seek your continued support and collaboration in the following areas: Technical Assistance: To support the deployment of appropriate technology and systems that can improve the conduct of local government elections.
“ Capacity Building: To enhance the professionalism and operational efficiency of SIEC officials through joint training programs, workshops, and peer learning exchanges; and “Knowledge Sharing: To foster a platform for the exchange of best practices, research, and innovations in electoral management that can benefit both INEC and SIECS.
