The Former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has called for stronger media support and global collaboration to tackle the rising threat of misinformation and disinformation in Nigeria.
Elumu spoke at the maiden International Diplomatic and Security Conference organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) in Abuja.
Elumelu said disinformation is now a major weapon used to destabilize nations.
He said “We are in an era where lies spread faster than truth. Nigeria must fight back with smart diplomacy, intelligence, and a well-equipped media,”
He urged the government to empower DICAN with resources to hold institutions accountable, while also promoting media literacy and strategic communication.
Elumelu praised Nigeria’s 4Ds foreign policy Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography as key tools for national and global engagement, and stressed the need for unity in telling Nigeria’s story.
