The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has celebrated the official declaration of July 5 as “Ijaw Day” by the City of Houston, Texas.

Dabiri-Erewa said the declaration is a milestone worth celebrating.

Describing the move as a “historic recognition of Nigeria’s rich cultural fabric,” NiDCOM Chairman/CEO Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa applauded the Ijaw community in Houston for their efforts in bringing Nigerian traditions to the global stage.

“This declaration is more than a symbolic gesture; it’s a testament to the growing influence of Nigerians in the diaspora and the value the world is placing on our diverse cultures,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

She added that the recognition strengthens ties between Nigerians abroad and their roots, while also opening doors for greater collaboration between diaspora communities and local governments, particularly in Bayelsa State, the heartland of the Ijaw people.

NiDCOM praised the leadership and dedication of the Ijaw community in Houston, emphasizing that such achievements reflect positively on the country and inspire greater unity across the diaspora.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to championing Nigerian communities abroad and supporting initiatives that promote cultural pride and national development.
