Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the party.

The resignation of Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the 2023 poll follows his involvement in the formation of a new political alliance, the Alliance Democratic Congress.

The former vice president who is leading a coalition geared up to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election conveyed his decision in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of his Jada 1 ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

A copy of the letter was shared on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter) by his Special Assistant on Media.
In the letter, Atiku expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities he had within the party, including serving as Vice President for two terms and twice running as its presidential candidate.
He described the decision to leave as heartbreaking but necessary, citing the party’s departure from its founding values.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” the letter read. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
He also wished the party and its leadership success in the future.
