‘This is not a good night for Kamala Harris’

Kamala Harris has not performed as well as expected thus far, with areas on the East Coast becoming much “redder” compared with previous elections, says Steve Clemons, editor at large of The Hill and the host of Al Jazeera’s The Bottom Line.

“I was looking at counties in Florida, at some of the early East Coast’s respondents where you could see that Donald Trump had trounced Hilary Clinton last time or that Hilary Clinton had done far worse,” Clemons said.

“You saw this much more clearly this time – you saw that red areas of these districts became far redder. You saw areas around Washington DC, and in Virginia’s suburbs that have gone red or there has been red encroachment by Republicans,” he said.

“So this is not a good night for Kamala Harris in my view, it is a very good night given the expectations for Donald Trump. There is no Kamala wave that we are seeing right now,” he added.

And while important battleground states are still up for grabs, Clemons said, many of the prediction markets are giving these to Trump.

“There is a lot to play out yet but clearly, the Kamala Harris campaign thought they were doing much better than they are doing right now”.

Oregon called for Harris

The AP has called Oregon for the Democratic Party, giving Harris eight Electoral votes.

Republicans ‘cautiously optimistic’ as Trump leads in North Carolina, Georgia

James Davis, a Republican strategist and founder of Touchdown Strategies, breaks down the state of play so far for the Trump campaign.

“You’ve got to be cautiously optimistic if you’re the Trump campaign. You’re doing really well in North Carolina, you’re doing really well in Georgia, everything looks really close in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” he tells Al Jazeera.

“We know that Pennsylvania is going to be ground zero here. Trump spent a lot of time, they’ve invested a lot there. They had pretty good numbers from the early voting measures. It really is a turnout game at this point.”

The four states – North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – are among seven closely fought battleground states that will decide the election. Trump is leading in North Carolina and Georgia, while the race in Pennsylvania remains a tossup, according to early results.

North Carolina called for Trump

The AP has called North Carolina for the Republican Party, giving Trump 16 Electoral votes.

This is the first battleground state that has been called in the race.

Trump team pleased with the way things are going in Georgia

Donald Trump has been following the evening events from Mar-a-Lago. He’s surrounded by his family and some of his closest supporters, including Elon Musk and Robert Kennedy Jr.

The Trump campaign is very pleased with how things are going in Georgia’s campaign. They think he is performing above expectations there. They believe he is going to win the state.

They are not so pleased about how things are going in Pennsylvania, where they had two events on Monday. They know how important that state is, but they are seeing a huge turnout among female voters and they are aware that in polls this year around, the majority of female voters have tended to break for Kamala Harris.

It’s a state she has got to win; if she loses Pennsylvania, then Trump is certainly a step closer to the White House – so everybody is focusing on that state, the crown jewel of the swing states.
