The Media Network of Women for Peace and Security (WPS) has described youth Empowerment as a major tool in creating the desired peace needed in all communities.

The Gombe State Coordinator of WPS Media Network, Alhassan Yahaya, stated this among other calls to action during a press briefing to commemorate the 2024 International Peace Day.

Represented by his Deputy, Comfort Mukollo, the Network also said it recognises the critical role of young people in promoting peace and encourage their participation in peace building effort.

It called for inclusive dialogue saying, “we emphasize the need for inclusive, respectful dialogue to resolve conflicts and foster mutual understanding”.

It stressed the need for global solidarity through collective action to address pressing issues like climate change, inequality and social justice which threatens global peace and security.

Pledging it’s commitment, it said, “we reiterate our dedication to the United Nations charter’s principles, upholding human dignity and promoting peaceful resolution of disputes”.

It urged Governments, civil societies and individuals to advocate for policies promoting peace, justice, and human rights; support peace building initiatives and conflict resolution efforts. “Engage in respectful dialogue and encourage others to do same”. The Network stressed.

While providing a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace and nonviolence, the Media Network encouraged a ceasefire and reduction of violence worldwide.

It highlighted the challenges facing the world to include, ongoing conflicts, climate change and environmental degradation, inequality and social injustice, disinformation and polarization and stated emphatically that the world is in dire need of peace.

“As we observe International Peace Day 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity and cooperation. Together we can create more just, equitable and peaceful world for all”, the Network appealed.
