Two village heads have been remanded behind bars for selling government land in Ogun State.
They were remanded alongside four others by an Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Abeokuta.
The village heads of Agejo and Ake, Olalekan Odemuyiwa and Segun Konigbagbe, respectively and their accomplices are to remain in the Ibara Custodial Centre for allegedly encroaching on the land belonging to the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation.
The 24.253 hectares of land is in Olorunsogo village, Oba Road, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Magistrate, Morenikeji Osibajo, remanded
The communities are in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Others are Wasiu Ogunsina, 51; Kabiru Olafenwa; Babatunde Odemuyiwa, 61; and Dare Awodele.
Magistrate Osibajo said the defendants would be detained for 30 days pending the issuance of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Adekanmi Adeusi, attached to the Task Force and Anti-Land Grabbing Unit, noted that the matter was reported through a petition by the management of the OGBC to the office of the Secretary to the State Government on June 19, 2023.
Adeusi stated the defendants entered the land and sold and developed some parts, thereby preventing the OGBC from using it.
The management of the broadcast station called for the retrieval of the land to prevent further loss to the illegal occupants.
Magistrate Osibajo, however, adjourned the case till August 15, 2023.
