The issue of terrorism, unconstitutional change of government and humanitarian crisis ↔would be on the frontburner at the 37th Session of the Economic Community of West African State, ECOWAS slated for 25 November 2022, in Abuja.
The region is currently plagued by insecurity with the activities of Boko Haram and Isis in the Lake Chad and also humanitarian challenges.
The session according to a statement by the ECOWAS Commission would be chaired by the Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea Bissau to Nigeria and Permanent Representative of Guinea Bissau to ECOWAS Joao Butiamco.
The statement reads, “As part of its statutory meetings, the ECOWAS Commission will hold the 37th Session of the Mediation and Security Council on the 25th of November, 2022.
“The council which would be chaired by the Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea Bissau to Nigeria and Permanent Representative of Guinea Bissau to ECOWAS H.E. Joao Butiamco will consider several memoranda including those combatting terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government, humanitarian situation in the region, the transition processes in the region, ECOWAS Peace Support Operations, among others.”
The statement also said there would be consideration of other reports by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Dr. Abdel- fatau Musah
The just concluded 32nd Meeting of the ECOWAS Administrative and Finance Committee (AFC) in Abuja had stated that the Commission’s 2023 budget of the region is to focus on peace.
The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission,
Omar Touray, President, said that the region will focus on four major areas with the aim of placing the sub-region back on track for regional integration.
Touray said that the 2023 Community budget of “Consolidation and Reforms” is prepared to ensure the consolidation of the gains made in the institutional reform process and support the region’s recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia War.
“These four objectives are; Enhanced peace and security, Deeper Regional Integration, Good Governance, Inclusive and Sustained Development.
