Agreemo delays posting of ambassadors-designate

The 95 Ambassadors-Designate may not be resuming immediatley at their respective missions abroad, it was learnt.

The posting will only be concluded when the host countries accept the ambassadors-designate.

The Ambassadors-Designate are expected to pick up their letters on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari only on Tuesday approved the posting of the Ambassadors-Designate five months after they received the nod from the senate.

Findings on Thursday revealed that the Presidential approval granted on Tuesday that it is not yet uhuru for the Ambassadors-Designate despite posting approval by the president.

The Ambassadors-Desingnate still need to get letter of acceptance or what is called agreemo before they can be considered posted.

According to sources in the diplomatic circle, the Tuesday presidential approval of the posting of the Ambassadors-Designate was just the first step towards posting.

The sources said the blanket approval granted by the president, only authorises the ministry to commence sending letters out to the various host countries for acceptance of the president appointees.

According to the sources it is until the Ambassadors-Designate are accepted by their host countries, they cannot be said to have been posted.

One of the sources explained that until an Ambassadors-Designate recieved letter of acceptance or what is called agreemo before you can be considered posted.

The source said that is why there is always reserve countries for the Ambassadors-Designate.

Another source in the diplomatic circle explained that the process differs from country to country. The source said the process might take up to a month for some countries like US, UK, Canada and the rest, while for some countries it can take like a week.

If an Ambassadors-Designate is rejected it is expected that such ambassador be posted to another country. This, the source said explained why it looks like the issue of pposting is shielded in secrecy.

The ministry, in a statement on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, announced their posting to Nigerian Missions abroad.

The ministry, however, did not include where they were posted to.

But, reliable sources said the nominees have been asked to pick up their letters from the ministry.

The Ambassadors-Designate hope to know details of their postings in the letters.
