North West, Niger Delta Govs endorse deployment of vigilantes over banditry

Piqued by incessant bandits attacks in rural communities across the country, Governors from the North-West region with their counterparts from the Niger Delta have concluded arrangement to deploy trained vigilantes in their respective States to protect rural communities.

A statement by the Director-General Media to Katsina Governor, Abdul Labaran Malumfashi, said Governor Aminu Masari disclosed this while addressing participants at the 14th Special Training Session at the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja on the topic: “Governance, security & sustainable development in Africa: Nexus, challenges & prospect.”

Masari further explained establishing the trained vigilante groups was to support security personnel that are fully committed to the fight against criminals in the region

The Governor also announced that the state government had commenced the training programme with 500 members of the vigilante group selected from the 34 local governments as the first batch

He said: “The training would be sustained to ensure all the LGAs have trained members of vigilante groups, the program is aimed at addressing security challenges. It has been fully supported by the Inspector General of Police.”

‘’Deploying vigilantes to the grassroots can help tackle banditry if governments within the region work towards achieving the desired goal.’’
