The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Monday said a total of 752,011 new voters have registered online in the last 21 days, constituting an average of 35,810 registrants per day.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman (Information and Voter Education Committee), Festus Okoye, in a statement, said 74 per cent of applications received so far on the online portal for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise were from youths.

He said, “Out of this figure, 562,254 (74.7 per cent) are youths between the ages of 18 and 34. In terms of gender, 493,128 are male while 369,188 are female registrants.”

On State-by-State distribution, a total 232,880 new applications came from Osun State, making it the state with the highest new registrants.

Okoye said Ebonyi recorded the lowest with 1,046 applications.

He recalled the commission’s earlier decision postponing the commencement of physical registration of voters to Monday July 26 2021.

The statement titled: “Update on online pre-registration of voters”, read: “It is now three weeks since the commission commenced the online pre-registration of voters on June 28 2021.

“In keeping with our commitment to give weekly updates to Nigerians, a total of 752,011 new voters have registered online in the last 21 days as at 7am today Monday July 19 2021 (an average of 35,810 registrants per day.)

“Out of this figure, 562,254 (74.7 per cent) are youths between the ages of 18 and 34. In terms of gender, 493,128 are male while 369,188 are female registrants.

“Detailed distribution of registrants by State/FCT, age, occupation and disability has been uploaded on the commission’s website and social media platforms. The commission wishes to reiterate its earlier decision that because of the declaration of Tuesday 20 and Wednesday July 21 2021 as public holidays by the Federal Government, the commencement of physical registration is now rescheduled to Monday July 26 2021.

“Online pre-registrants who booked for appointment to complete their registration physically between Monday 19 and Friday July 23 2021 will be notified within the next few days of the new dates for their appointments.

“The commission once again reassures all Nigerians that every eligible citizen willing to register as a voter will have the opportunity to do so.”
