ECOWAS Parliamentarians and Stakeholders have agreed that existing regulations and texts on cyber security be enhanced in the region.
Besides, Member States encouraged to enforce the reviewed regulations.They also called for the need to have a National and Regional Data Centers to avoid storage of critical data outside Africa.
The Parliamentarians reached the agreement at the closing of the ECOWAS Inter Parliamentary Forum for ICT which held in Niamey, Niger Republic.
According to the parliamentarians this regional strategy for cyber security and the fight against cybercrime will help improve the fight against cybercrime in the region and Member States.
Other benefit outlined by the parliamentarians is that the regional policy for the protection of critical infrastructure will ensure the resilience and security of the region’s essential infrastructure and services.
The 2nd edition of the Inter Parliamentary Forum on Information and Communications Technology of the ECOWAS Area (FITIC) held at the Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Center, Niamey, Niger Republic is aimed at strengthening the capacity of ECOWAS Parliamentarians on the challenges of cybercrime in the West African region.
ECOWAS Parliamentarians have a leading role to play in the harmonization, adoption of regional cyber security texts and their effective implementation in Member States.
