INEC Suspends Akure North Electoral Officer, Two Others Over Negligence

INEC clears 16 political parties for Anambra poll

Releated Post

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has indefinitely suspended Mrs. Akole Mobolade, the Electoral Officer for Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, over allegations of gross negligence, absenteeism, and poor performance.

In a sweeping disciplinary move, the commission also ordered the immediate suspension of Electoral Officers 1 and 3 in the same local government council, directing them to step aside with immediate effect.
Following their suspension, an administrative officer, Bisi Farokanmi, has been appointed as the acting electoral officer to take over and oversee operations in the council area.
Unscheduled Inspection Triggers Sanctions
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, announced the sanctions on Tuesday during a press briefing following an inspection tour of INEC facilities and election materials across the state capital and neighboring council areas.
The inspection was aimed at assessing staff performance, monitoring the ongoing Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) collection exercise, and evaluating the commission’s overall state of readiness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Trouble reportedly began when Dr. Agboke paid an unscheduled visit to the Akure North office, only to find the top officials absent from their posts.
Describing their absence as irresponsible and a direct breach of official duty, Agboke warned that INEC would maintain zero tolerance for indiscipline, especially during a critical phase of electoral preparations.
”All officials are expected to demonstrate commitment and diligence, particularly as INEC intensifies preparations for the forthcoming general elections and continues its nationwide PVC collection exercise,” the REC stated.

Preparation Progress Elsewhere
In contrast, the REC expressed satisfaction with operations at the Akure South local government office, commending the staff for their presence, dedication, and high level of organization in the facility’s store.
Highlighting Akure South’s strategic importance as the state capital, Agboke reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering credible elections in 2027, adding that the distribution of non-sensitive materials to local government offices across the state has already commenced.
