Cross River governor, Prince Bassey Otu, has directed his aides to withdraw a police complaint against Denis Odama, a young Cross Riverian detained over an alleged derogatory statement made against him.
The governor announced the directive on his official Facebook page Wednesday night, saying he had been “fully briefed” on the matter.
According to Otu, the complaint was lodged by some of his aides following what they described as an “insidious statement” against his person.
“As a father and leader, I have directed the aides involved to withdraw their complaint against Mr. Odama,” the governor stated.
He also directed the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to “urgently review the matter and, in the exercise of his constitutional discretion, take the necessary steps to discontinue the case.”
The governor said the action was to ensure that Odama is released from the correctional centre “without further delay and reunited with his family.”
Defending the decision, Otu referenced Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which guarantees freedom of expression.
“I hold a firm belief and faith in the provisions of the Constitution
“I remain committed to upholding this right for all Cross Riverians, including those who criticise me,” he said.
However, the governor urged young people to exercise that freedom responsibly.
“I also encourage our young people, even as they exercise this constitutional freedom, to do so responsibly and with regard for the cultural values and moral standards we hold dear as a people,” he added.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to listening to criticism and constructive feedback.
“You voted me as your governor to listen and to act on positive suggestions, advice, and constructive criticism and I will continue not only to listen, but to act accordingly. Cross River State is our collective responsibility to protect.”
As of press time, the Attorney General’s office had not confirmed when the nolle prosequi would be filed to effect Odama’s release.
