Nigeria and Mali have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and deepening cooperation on security, diplomacy and other areas of mutual interest following the presentation of the copies of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of Mali, Ambassador Geoffrey Ijomah David Chima.
Ambassador Chima formally presented the copies of his Letters of Credence to Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, His Excellency Abdoulaye Diop, on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Bamako, marking a significant step towards the commencement of his diplomatic assignment in the West African nation.
Following the protocol ceremony, both officials held bilateral discussions focused on expanding cooperation between Nigeria and Mali and identifying new opportunities for collaboration in areas of shared interest.
The discussions highlighted the need to strengthen existing diplomatic consultation mechanisms as a means of promoting closer engagement between the two countries and advancing South-South cooperation. Both sides stressed that enhanced diplomatic engagement would create greater opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships and contribute to regional development.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the evolving geopolitical situation within the West African sub-region, particularly the growing security challenges confronting the region.
Ambassador Chima and Minister Diop underscored the importance of intensified collaboration in addressing terrorism and other transnational security threats, noting that collective action remains essential in tackling the complex challenges affecting the Sahel and the wider West African region.
The two officials further emphasized the need for stronger solidarity among African states, sustained political dialogue, and greater mutual trust as critical pillars for promoting regional peace, stability and sustainable development.
They agreed that closer diplomatic cooperation would not only strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Mali but also contribute to broader efforts aimed at enhancing security and fostering stability across the region.
The presentation of the copies of Letters of Credence represents a key diplomatic milestone ahead of Ambassador Chima’s formal presentation of his Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Mali, after which he will officially assume full ambassadorial responsibilities.
