The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has charged political parties in the country on the need to strengthen internal democracy through transparent and credible primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan made the call while delivering the keynote address at the public presentation of Shadows: Protest Essays on Africa’s Most Consequential Country (1999–2023), a book authored by THISDAY Newspapers Managing Director, Mr. Eniola Bello, in Abuja.
He said most election-related disputes originate from party primaries, stressing that credible elections begin with credible candidate selection processes.
The INEC Chairman urged political parties to respect their constitutions, follow established guidelines and allow members to participate freely in the nomination of candidates.
He proposed an amendment to the Electoral Act to require political parties to conclude the nomination of candidates at least one year before general elections.
According to him, early resolution of nomination disputes would reduce pre-election litigation and enable INEC to concentrate on conducting credible elections.
Amupitan also called for greater financial autonomy for the Commission, saying the current funding arrangement limits its operational efficiency despite constitutional provisions.
He advocated direct funding for INEC from the Federation Account to strengthen the Commission’s independence and improve the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by his Special Adviser on General Duties, Aliyu Modibbo, said democracy flourishes when governments remain accountable and receptive to criticism from citizens.
The event was attended by senior government officials, jurists, diplomats, media executives, academics and civil society leaders, who gathered to celebrate Bello’s contribution to documenting Nigeria’s democratic journey.
