The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance identity verification and support the conduct of credible, transparent and secure elections across Nigeria.

The commitment was made by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Coker-Odusote said the recently signed National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, has repositioned NIMC as Nigeria’s foundational digital identity authority, with responsibility for managing the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Root Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

She explained that the new legal framework would improve identity verification, reduce fraud, expand access to government and private sector services, and reinforce the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

According to her, NIMC is prepared to provide the digital identity infrastructure required to support INEC’s mandate of conducting free, fair and transparent elections.

Responding, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan welcomed the renewed partnership, describing the enactment of the NIMC Act as a significant milestone that would deepen inter-agency cooperation and strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process through reliable identity management.
