Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially assumed office as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar following the presentation of his Letter of Credence to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, in a ceremony held at the Amiri Diwan in Doha on Thursday.
The formal presentation of credentials, conducted with full state honours, including the inspection of a Guard of Honour, marks the commencement of Ambassador Yakubu’s diplomatic assignment and formally authorizes him to represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Qatar.
Following the ceremony, the Amir received the Nigerian envoy in a private audience, where he extended a warm welcome and reaffirmed the strong and cordial relationship that has existed between Nigeria and Qatar. He recalled previous high-level exchanges between both countries and reiterated Qatar’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Ambassador Yakubu thanked the Amir for the warm reception and conveyed Nigeria’s determination to deepen engagement with Qatar in strategic sectors. He highlighted trade, investment, education, security and humanitarian affairs as priority areas for enhanced collaboration between the two countries.
The ambassador also expressed condolences to the Qatari leadership over the recent accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City, conveying Nigeria’s solidarity with the government and people of Qatar during the period of mourning.
The credential presentation comes as Nigeria and Qatar continue to expand diplomatic and economic engagement through increased political dialogue, investment opportunities and sectoral partnerships. Analysts say the commencement of Ambassador Yakubu’s tenure is expected to provide renewed impetus for bilateral cooperation, particularly in attracting investment, boosting commercial relations and fostering closer institutional ties.
With his credentials formally accepted by the Amir, Ambassador Yakubu is expected to lead Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Doha and work towards advancing the country’s foreign policy objectives while promoting stronger economic, political and cultural relations between Nigeria and Qatar.
