With just over two months to the grand finale, organisers of the 5th Cycling Lagos have thrown open the online registration portal for cyclists, setting the stage for what is expected to be the biggest edition of the annual event when it culminates on September 12, 2026, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The registration exercise, which commenced on July 1, will run until August 26, giving professional cyclists, amateur riders, recreational cyclists, children, celebrities and cycling enthusiasts from Nigeria and beyond ample opportunity to secure participation in the prestigious event.

Announcing the commencement of registration in Lagos, Convener of Cycling Lagos and Managing Director of BrandEscort Communications, Bamidele Adeleye, urged prospective participants to register early through the official portal to facilitate seamless planning and accreditation.

He said participants could complete the registration process by scanning the QR code on the event flyer or by visiting the official Cycling Lagos website.

According to Adeleye, the online registration system was introduced to simplify participation, improve logistics and ensure efficient planning ahead of the event.

“The registration process has been designed to make participation seamless, enabling riders to register conveniently from anywhere while ensuring efficient planning, accreditation, and event logistics,” he said.

He explained that the competition would feature multiple categories, including professional cyclists, amateur riders, children, celebrities and recreational cyclists, underscoring the organisers’ commitment to inclusivity while promoting healthy living and active mobility.

Adeleye noted that beyond the races, Cycling Lagos has evolved into a platform for advocating environmental sustainability, road safety, youth empowerment and sports tourism.

He revealed that this year’s edition will be held under the theme, “Trash to Treasure,” which seeks to inspire conversations around transforming waste into economic opportunities and promoting environmental responsibility.

According to him, the theme also reflects the remarkable growth of Cycling Lagos since its inception in 2018.

“The theme reflects the Cycling Lagos story—an event that began with modest public interest in 2018 but has grown into a movement that continues to inspire similar cycling initiatives across Nigeria and Africa.

“Today, Cycling Lagos has become a reference point for cycling events, demonstrating how one powerful idea can transform communities, inspire healthier lifestyles, and encourage environmental consciousness,” Adeleye stated.

He recalled that when the initiative began, organised cycling events were relatively uncommon in Nigeria, but sustained advocacy over the years has helped expand cycling culture nationwide.

Adeleye further pointed to the successful hosting of Cycling Kano in collaboration with the Kano State Government in 2025 as evidence of the initiative’s growing national influence, describing it as the first major cycling event of its kind in Northern Nigeria.

He added that the four previous editions of Cycling Lagos have attracted thousands of cyclists and spectators while enhancing Lagos’ reputation as a leading destination for sports tourism in Africa.

The convener appealed to corporate organisations, government agencies, development partners and cycling enthusiasts to support the event, stressing that it offers a unique platform for advancing public health, environmental sustainability, youth development and sustainable transportation through cycling.
