The High Commission of India in Nigeria has highlighted yoga as a powerful tool for healthy ageing, stress management, and preventive healthcare, urging Nigerians to embrace the ancient practice as part of a healthier lifestyle.

The call was made during the celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) at the Velodrome of the National Stadium, Abuja, where diplomats, government officials, sports administrators, students, members of the Indian community, and wellness enthusiasts gathered to mark the global event.

The celebration, themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focused on how regular yoga practice can help people maintain physical vitality, mental sharpness, and emotional well-being throughout their lives.

The Indian High Commission envoy Abhishek Singh noted that the annual observance has evolved into a worldwide movement promoting health, peace, and human connection, with millions of people across continents embracing yoga regardless of nationality, religion, or cultural background.

The event drew the participation of Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Muhammad Saidu Dahiru, Nigeria’s High Commissioner-Designate to India; Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Shehu Dikko; and the Commission’s Director-General, Dr. Bukola Olopade.

Abhishek Singh underscored the growing relevance of yoga in addressing contemporary health challenges, particularly as populations age and lifestyles become increasingly sedentary and stressful.

According to the envoy yoga offers a holistic approach to health by integrating physical exercise, breathing techniques, meditation, and mindfulness practices that support both physical fitness and mental resilience.
He explained that the practice helps improve flexibility, balance, strength, mobility, and posture while also reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity.

“Yoga creates a dedicated space for people to reconnect with themselves, improve their well-being, and cultivate inner peace amid the demands of modern life,”Abhishek Singh said.

The celebration also highlighted yoga’s international recognition. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in December 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Two years later, UNESCO recognized yoga as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
Abhishek Singh described yoga as one of India’s most significant cultural contributions to the world, noting that its message of harmony and unity continues to resonate globally.
He also explained that the term “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word Yuj, meaning “to unite,” symbolizing the connection between mind, body, and spirit as well as the relationship between humanity and nature.

Beyond its physical benefits, Abhishek Singh emphasized yoga’s role in promoting peaceful coexistence and fostering a sense of shared humanity.

“Yoga transcends borders, languages and cultures. It has become a universal language of wellness and peace,” the envoy stated.

Participants were encouraged to see yoga not merely as a form of exercise but as a lifestyle practice capable of improving overall quality of life and supporting healthy ageing.

The event featured guided yoga sessions and demonstrations designed to showcase techniques suitable for people of different ages and fitness levels.

The High Commission also used the occasion to acknowledge the support of the National Sports Commission, the management of the Velodrome, corporate partners including Indorama and African Industries Group, members of the Indian community, and volunteers who contributed to the successful organization of the programme.
