Chiefs and residents of Tunganmaje Community in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to create a Divisional Police Head Quarter to help prevent crime in the area.
The residents who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said, the community had experienced series of kidnapping in the past few months and also called for a meeting with the commissioner of police FCT.
However, the residents also debunked a newspaper publication that said the community decry the withdrawal of police men and that the police were paid N20, 000 each during their assignment in the area.
The Chief of Tunganmaje, Alhaji Salisu Isiaku Na’annabi, said the police special squad were not withdrawn from the area but rather were deployed to Kuje to carry out an assignment and would return to the community when they are done.
He thanked the Inspector General of Police in anticipation for approving the Police Divisional Headquarters in the area and also called for the fast tracking and building of the police station to help address security challenges in the area.
Prof. Ichado Sunday, a resident and leader of non indigenes in the community said the commissioner of Police in FCT, the Chief Palace and residents of the community have been cooperating to ensure protection of lives and property.
Sunday said if the Police Divisional Headquarters is built and completed, it would go a long way to address issues of kidnapping and armed robbery in the area.
Barrister David Aigbefoh, said the community have provided a land of about 3200sqm for the building of the police Divisional Headquarters in the area and called on the Inspector General of Police for speedy implementation and construction of the police station.
The Barrister who is also the vice chairman Nigerian Bar Association, Gwagwalada branch said the rate of insecurity in the community has been worrisome but with the intervention of the Commissioner of police the rate of crime had reduced.
He said the community had been the hot spot for banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery but with the proactiveness of the police have reduced the tension in the area.
According to him, the newspaper publication saying that the community decry the withdrawal of police men in the community was not true, urging the public to disregard such news.
He said the people of the community have asked the Inspector General of Police through the commissioner of police FCT to fast track the creation of the Divisional Police HQ to help reduce crime in the area.
However, he commended the commissioner of police FCT and the DPO of ZUBA Division for the efforts in ensuring the protection of lives and property in the area. (NAN)
