The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, whose passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans, and admirers across social media.

The actor’s death was confirmed on Tuesday by fellow entertainers, many of whom described the news as shocking and heartbreaking.

Among those who paid tribute was award-winning actress Funke Akindele, who shared an emotional message on her Instagram story while reflecting on their friendship and memorable moments together.

“Hmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi,’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in peace, Alex,” she wrote.

Here are some key facts about the late actor:
• Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke was born on April 10, 1986.
• He was originally from Arochukwu in Abia State.
• He attended Federal Government College Daura in Katsina State before proceeding to the University of Calabar, where he studied Law.
• Ekubo gained public attention after emerging as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant.
• His journey in Nollywood began with a minor role in Sinners in the House in 2003.
• He later rose to fame after featuring in the hit movie Weekend Getaway, which helped establish him as one of Nollywood’s leading actors.
• The late actor became known for his versatility, starring in both romantic comedies and drama productions.
• During his career, he appeared in more than 100 films, including Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, and A Sunday Affair.
• In 2020, he was recognised among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40” by the United Nations.
• He also received an honorary degree in Arts and Culture from ISCG University in the Benin Republic in 2021.
• Outside acting, Ekubo was involved in humanitarian and youth empowerment initiatives.
