The Onwumere family of Umuonuna in Umuopara Abba, Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, has concluded the burial rites of their revered patriarch, Chief Lawrence Uzoatuegwu Onwumere (Chikwadoeze I of Abba), in a ceremony marked by dignity, tradition, and widespread community participation.
Chief Onwumere was laid to rest on April 8, 2026, in his hometown of Abba, drawing a large gathering of family members, friends, political figures, traditional leaders, and well-wishers who assembled to celebrate a life widely regarded as impactful and exemplary. The ceremony reflected the deep respect and admiration the late elder commanded throughout his lifetime.
The burial rites were led by his son, Sir (Dr.) Chidi Onwumere, alongside members of the extended Onwumere family. Tributes poured in from various quarters, highlighting the deceased’s enduring commitment to family values, community development, and the unity of the Abba people.
Among the dignitaries present were the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu; former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ugonna Ozuruigbo (OZB); and the Majority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chief Kanayo Onyemaechi. Their presence underscored the significant influence Chief Onwumere wielded beyond his immediate community.
Traditional and community leadership was also well represented. The President General of Abba, Hon. Ikenna Anochie, attended the ceremony, as did the traditional ruler of Abba, His Royal Highness Ndubueze Mmaduabuchukwu, Eze Omenma I of Abba, who offered prayers and royal blessings in honour of the departed elder.

Speakers at the event described Chief Onwumere as a man of integrity, wisdom, and generosity, whose life was dedicated to fostering peace and progress within the community. His role as a father, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather was repeatedly emphasized, with family members noting that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
The ceremony was widely praised as peaceful, successful, and hitch-free, reflecting both meticulous planning and the unity of purpose among attendees. Cultural displays, traditional rites, and moments of reflection added solemnity and colour to the occasion, providing a befitting farewell to a respected community figure.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of the burial, the Onwumere family expressed profound gratitude to all who attended and supported them during their period of mourning. They extended special appreciation to community members, friends, associates, and well-wishers whose presence and contributions ensured the success of the ceremonies.
