The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised aspects of its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, extending the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members.
The decision follows concerns raised by political parties during a consultative meeting with the Commission held on March 24, 2026, regarding the earlier timeline set for submitting membership registers.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the Commission has adjusted the schedule to align with the provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
Originally, political parties were required to submit their membership registers between April 1 and April 21, 2026. However, the Commission has now extended the final deadline to May 10, 2026, providing more flexibility for parties to comply with the statutory requirement.
According to INEC, the adjustment ensures that the 21-day notice period mandated by law—requiring parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their primaries is fully observed.
Despite the adjustment, the Commission maintained the approved window for party primaries, which will hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
INEC emphasised that political parties are free to fix their primary election dates within this period but must ensure strict compliance with the updated timeline for submission of membership registers.
“The register of party members must be submitted to the Commission not later than 21 days before the holding of their respective primaries,” the statement noted.
This means that parties planning to conduct early primaries within the approved window must submit their registers well ahead of time to avoid disqualification or procedural setbacks.
The Commission reiterated the importance of adherence to the revised timetable, stressing that compliance by political parties is critical to ensuring a smooth, transparent, and credible electoral process.
INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging stakeholders and making necessary adjustments where required, in line with legal provisions and best practices in election management.
The revised schedule is expected to provide clarity and operational flexibility for political parties as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election cycle.
