The Chairman of the INEC Press Corps, Segun Ojumu, has called on journalists covering Nigeria’s electoral body to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, patriotism, and integrity as the country prepares for a new cycle of elections.

In a goodwill message to mark the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, Ojumu congratulated Muslim members of the corps on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan, describing the period as one marked by sacrifice, discipline, and spiritual renewal.

He noted that the virtues cultivated during Ramadan resilience, patience, and self-discipline mirror the qualities required of journalists tasked with reporting on Nigeria’s democratic process. According to him, these values are especially crucial as the nation approaches a demanding electoral period.

“With the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun fast approaching, and preparations for the 2027 General Elections already underway, our responsibility as watchdogs of democracy has never been more significant,” Ojumu said.

He emphasized that the credibility and evolution of Nigeria’s elections depend largely on the integrity of media reportage. As intermediaries between the electoral umpire and the public, he stressed that members of the press corps must go beyond routine reporting to serve as active contributors to transparency and accountability.

Ojumu urged journalists to bring renewed dedication to their duties, highlighting their role in fostering public trust in the electoral system. He added that objective, insightful, and courageous journalism would be vital in shaping public perception and strengthening democratic institutions.

The chairman further encouraged members to draw inspiration from the lessons of Ramadan as they navigate the pressures of covering high-stakes political activities in the months ahead.

he also wished members and their families a peaceful and joyful celebration, urging them to stay safe and return refreshed for the tasks ahead.

“May this Eid provide a moment of rest before we resume our critical national assignment,” he said.
