The 2026 Nigeria Diaspora Economic Commission to be held in Toronto, Canada, Abik Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission had said.

The Conference scheduled for August 13 to 15, 2026, she said will function as a transaction-focused investment platform.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Dabiri-Erewa said the conference, in Toronto, will pivot from dialogue to deal execution—prioritising bankable projects and investor matchmaking over traditional diaspora engagement formats.

She noted that while Nigerians abroad remit over $20 billion annually, much of that capital remains consumption-driven. The conference, she explained, is designed to channel a portion of these flows into structured investments across priority sectors.

“This is about converting goodwill into governance-backed investment pipelines—moving capital from informal transfers into formal, scalable ventures,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

NIDEC 2026 will feature curated investment pipelines spanning fintech, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, healthcare, real estate, and financial services—sectors aligned with Nigeria’s diversification strategy and long-term growth targets.

the Commission is embedding execution mechanisms into the conference architecture, including business-to-business matchmaking sessions, investor roundtables, and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) tied to pre-identified projects.

According to NiDCOM, the objective is to broker direct partnerships between diaspora investors, subnational governments, and private sector operators with ready-to-deploy opportunities, thereby reducing entry barriers and accelerating deal closure timelines.

The initiative also reflects broader efforts by the Federal Government to deepen non-oil capital inflows and expand private sector participation in infrastructure financing and industrial development.

To support participation, NiDCOM is working with Nigerian diplomatic missions in Canada and host authorities to streamline travel logistics. This includes the introduction of a dedicated event code system aimed at simplifying visa processing for delegates.

Also speaking, Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada, Abba Zanna-Kawu, said the conference is expected to strengthen commercial linkages between Nigeria and its diaspora, particularly in North America, while delivering tangible investment outcomes.

Beyond capital mobilisation, the conference will integrate cultural diplomacy elements, including the Flavours of Nigeria Festival and the hosting of The Headies Honors in Canada for the first time—an effort to blend economic engagement with soft power projection.
