The President of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents, Innocent Odoh, has called on journalists across the West African sub-region to embrace their critical role as agents of peace, unity, and regional integration, particularly in the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr.
In a goodwill message marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Odoh congratulated Muslim journalists and the broader media community on the successful completion of fasting and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr. He commended media practitioners for their resilience, courage, and steadfast commitment to truth and accountability despite the evolving challenges confronting journalism in the region.
Describing Eid-el-Fitr as a symbol of sacrifice, discipline, and spiritual renewal, the AWALCO President urged journalists to reflect these values in their professional conduct and daily engagements. He emphasized that the occasion provides a timely opportunity for introspection and recommitment to ethical and impactful journalism.
“At a time when our region faces complex security and socio-political challenges, the role of journalists has never been more critical. You are not just storytellers, you are bridge-builders, agenda-setters, and custodians of public trust,” Odoh stated.
He further charged media practitioners to deploy their platforms responsibly by promoting understanding over division, truth over misinformation, and unity over discord. According to him, West Africa requires a media landscape that inspires hope, fosters dialogue, and strengthens the bonds of cohesion among its diverse populations.
Odoh also stressed the importance of upholding the highest standards of professionalism, including accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting. He noted that credible journalism remains a cornerstone for sustainable development and democratic growth across the sub-region.
Encouraging journalists to harness the spirit of Eid-el-Fitr, he urged them to recommit to storytelling that advances peace, deepens democratic values, and supports the strengthening of institutions within West Africa.
The AWALCO President concluded by wishing Muslim faithful a peaceful, joyous, and fulfilling Eid celebration, expressing hope that the blessings of the season would usher in renewed optimism and prosperity for the region.
