The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has officially decamped to the All Progressives Congress.
Yusuf was formally received by the former National Chairman of the party and immediate past Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje; the Deputy President of the Senate and Senator representing Kano South, Barau Jibrin; the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata; and other top party leaders.
He announced that his decision was taken collectively with key political stakeholders in the state.
He stressed that his return to the APC was anchored on the need to work more closely with the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
He challenged leadership to rise above comfort, sentiment and personal selfishness. That is why, after wide consultations and careful reflection on the future of Kano State and present realities, I have relinquished my membership of the NNPP and joined the party that I believe is better for Kano,” Yusuf said.
According to him : “I, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, alongside my cabinet, 22 out of 24 members of the State House of Assembly and all 44 local government chairmen, have agreed to align ourselves with the ruling party, the APC”.
The governor said his return to the APC was based on the reality of aligning with the Federal Government to support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as development-driven and beneficial to Kano State.
He stressed that the decision was neither driven by personal interest nor negative considerations, but by the desire to promote peace, unity and development in the state.
“Kano is blessed with enormous potential. We must put an end to confrontational politics. Governance is not a personal contest but a responsibility entrusted to leaders, and we must move forward with that understanding,” he said.
Yusuf added that aligning with the central government would end what he described as isolation politics and accelerate development in the state.
He expressed confidence that the move would create a calmer political atmosphere in Kano, noting that it did not diminish the contributions of those who supported his emergence.
“My decision does not erode the value of those who helped bring us to power. I remain grateful to them,” he said.
The governor also urged the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to view the decision as a developmental and well-intentioned move in the interest of Kano State.
“My loyalty is unwavering and belongs to Kano. Kano comes first before anyone,” Yusuf declared.
He assured residents that his government would remain inclusive, adding that no group or individual would be excluded.
“This decision is meant to stabilise the polity and create a single focus for Kano to move forward in unity. The government remains inclusive, and everyone will be carried along,” he said.
Earlier, the APC State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, described the governor’s decision as being in the best interest of Kano State, pledging the party’s full support and loyalty to Yusuf’s administration.
He added that Kano was ready to work closely with President Tinubu and the Federal Government to deliver meaningful development.
