Kebbi hospital blast caused by overheated gas cylinder, not bomb- Police

The recent explosion at the General Hospital in Bagudo, Kebbi is caused by overheated gas cylinders and air-conditioning, Police in Kebbi State has said.

According to the police an inferno had led to overheating of gas cylinders and air-conditioning in the hospital which led to the explosion.

The police therefore ruled out any explosives or aerial activity.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday and triggered panic among residents, but no casualties were recorded, the police confirmed.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said in a statement that the explosion was caused by “an inferno which overheated air-conditioning and refrigerator gas cylinders, resulting in the loud explosions observed.”

“Investigations and expert assessments have confirmed that the incident was caused by an inferno. No explosives or aerial activity were involved,” he said.

SP Usman added, ‎“Assessments conducted by EOD-CBRN experts, alongside the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, confirmed that no explosives or aerial activity were involved.

“No loss of life or injuries occurred, as verified by the on-site expert teams.”

The Police Command urged the public and media to disregard unverified reports suggesting a bomb or helicopter involvement. “We advise everyone to rely solely on official information.

The situation remains fully under control, and the Command remains committed to public safety and transparency,” SP Usman said.

The explosion had created confusion, but the state police emphasised that the explosion was accidental and involved no criminal activity. Security agencies promptly secured the area to prevent further threats.
