The Sokoto State Government said the swift intervention of Nigerian troops on Sunday prevented what could have been a deadly attack on traders travelling along one of the state’s most volatile routes.
The armed bandits reportedly attempted to ambush a convoy heading to the weekly market in Sabon Birni.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd.), the traders were en route from Tarah village when the assailants positioned themselves for an ambush.

“Troops deployed in the area reportedly engaged the bandits and neutralised several of them, stopping the attack before it could inflict mass casualties”

The incident highlights the persistent insecurity across the Sabon Birni–Isa axis, a corridor long terrorised by armed groups and known for repeated ambushes, abductions, and market-day attacks.

According to officials the Sunday’s operation, marks another indication of the military’s renewed readiness to confront criminal networks in the region.

“The swift response, professionalism, and courage displayed by our military personnel averted what could have been a tragic incident. Their action once again reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the lives and property of our people”

He noted that troops operating in remote communities continue to make “consistent sacrifices,” and called for sustained pressure to dislodge bandit groups and their collaborators across the state and the wider North-West.

The government urged residents to strengthen community intelligence and support security operations by reporting suspicious movements or behaviours that could threaten public safety.

“Timely intelligence is essential, and we expect communities to actively support security agencies,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance approach to criminality, the state warned that informants, financiers, and anyone aiding banditry would face the full weight of the law.

He said Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration remains committed to providing security agencies with the resources, coordination, and institutional backing required to restore lasting peace in all parts of Sokoto State.
