In a bid to offer residents, visitors and tourists a-31 days cost-free travel during the Christmas season, Cross River government has flagged off its annual transportation programme.

Flagging off the event, the deputy governor, Rt. Hon Peter Odey, described the gesture as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to the welfare of citizens.

He affirmed that government wants citizens in the state to fully experience the joy of the season without worrying about transport costs.

“It is a season of sweetness, so we want the people in Cross River to be part of this season of sweetness, that is why we have decided to provide free transportation to CrossRiverians, tourists and visitors for the next 31 days,” Odey said.

He assured commuters of safety and reliability during the period, noting that the buses have been inspected and certified roadworthy, urging beneficiaries to use the service responsibly and spread the improving transport system in the state.

Odey also confirmed that the scheme includes riverine communities, with free boats deployed to serve water-connected settlements.

Special Adviser to the governor on General Duties, Ekpenyong Akiba, said the initiative reinforces Otu’s reputation as a promise-keeper who prioritises policies that directly cushion the impact of economic hardship.

He disclosed that the state has covered all major routes within Calabar metropolis through a dedicated shuttle system, while several buses have been assigned to long-distance corridors.

He added that”our phone numbers are boldly displayed on the branded buses for easy contact.”

According to Akiba, “over 60 minibuses have been deployed for the Calabar metropolis alone, operating daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the expanded festive mobility plan.”

For commercial drivers and support staff engaged in the exercise, the Special Adviser explained that allowances have been provided, while the buses will operate toll-free for the entire month.

A female commercial driver, Lela Ezege, expressed excitement participating in the scheme, describing the governor as a leader who listens to the people.

The duo of Sunday Oqua and Mrs. Emilia Okongor, who were the first passengers to board the free shuttle, commended government for alleviating transportation burdens at a time when the cost of living has surged.

They prayed for sustained implementation of people-oriented policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
