The Police has arrested five suspected armed robbers in separate operations across Enugu state, recovering guns, ammunition and other exhibits.

The arrests took place between October 20 and 29, 2025, in Amechi-Awkunanaw, New Garriki and along the Enugu–Abakaliki Road, the Police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, November 1.

According to him, “Operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS), while on stop-and-search duty along the Enugu–Abakaliki Road on 29th October 2025 at about 5:45 p.m., intercepted a shuttle bus en route to Abakaliki. One of the passengers, Odoh Joel, was found in unlawful possession of a cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun and was immediately arrested.

“preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was travelling from Awka, Anambra State.”

In a separate operation on October 28, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad stormed New Garriki by Ukwu-Achara at about 10:30 p.m. following credible intelligence.

Ndukwe said, “the operatives arrested one Orugbala Tochukwu and recovered from him a locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol loaded with one round of 9mm ammunition.”

The Command also raided a criminal hideout at Amechi-Awkunanaw on October 20, where three suspects — Friday Obasi (35), Offiah Ndubuisi (39) and Onyebuchi Udenze (45) — were arrested in a joint operation with Neighbourhood Watch members. Six live cartridges were recovered.

“They will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the spokesperson confirmed.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for what he described as “successful tactical operations” and assured residents that the Command will sustain its crackdown on violent crimes.

“We remain committed to staying the course in the fight against unrepentant criminals and ensuring the continued safety and security of residents of Enugu State,” he stated.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and law-abiding, especially as the festive season approaches.
