A coalition of lawyers in private practice has described the appointment of new INEC Chairman designate, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as one of the most credible appointments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The over 20,000 member coalition of lawyers are therefore appealing to the Nigerian Senate to speedily confirm the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dr. Rambi Ibrahim Ayala Esq, Convener of the Coalition who signed the lawyers statement, stated that Amupitan’s appointment which was backed by the Council of State, posseses the requisite expertise and integrity to lead Nigeria’s electoral umpire.

Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan’s appointment had trailed divergent views since it’s announcement late last week but Rambi Ayala, a renowned activist, philanthropist and politician together with his colleagues strongly opined that the appointment reflects the President and Council of State’s commitment to merit and excellence.

“As a renowned academic and expert in his field, Prof. Amupitan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, which will undoubtedly enhance INEC’s effectiveness.

“With the 2027 general elections looming, Nigeria needs a strong and independent INEC leadership to drive electoral reforms and ensure credible polls.

“We, therefore, humbly request that the Senate to expedite action on the confirmation process to enable Professor Amupitan to hit the ground running and provide the much-needed leadership to INEC”. The statement emphasized.

End.
