The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) management has issued a circular announcing the closure of the university, effective today, October 8, 2025. Students are required to vacate their hostels by 6 PM today or face disciplinary actions.

This decision comes amid ongoing protests over a recent increase in tuition fees, which students claim was introduced without consultation.

The university’s resumption date for the 2025/2026 academic session is scheduled for October 24, 2025 .

Earlier today, the students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) in Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria, blocked the East-West Road to protest a recent increase in tuition fees. According to reports, the university management had introduced a new fee structure, which the students felt was exorbitant.

The protesting students claimed that the fees were increased without consultation, with returning students facing a hike from N26,400 to N55,000, while new students would pay between N46,000 to N90,000 However, the university management has denied these claims, stating that the documents circulating on social media are fake and that discussions with the student union are still ongoing.

Some of the demands made by the students include:
– *Reversal of Fee Hike*: The students are calling for the immediate reversal of the fee increase.
– *Dialogue with Management*: The students want the university management to engage in genuine dialogue with them to resolve the issue.
– *Intervention by Government*: The students have also called on the government to intervene and ensure that the fee hike is reversed.

The situation is still fluid, with security personnel deployed to calm the situation and facilitate a resolution. The university management has announced that negotiations with the student union will resume after the ongoing examinations .
