The Cross River Police Command has clarified a robbery incident in Calabar South local government area of the state.
A statement by the Command Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, clarified an unverified viral publication currently circulating on social media concerning an alleged armed attack on female occupants in a guest house within Ambo/Mbukpa axis of Calabar South .
In the said viral report, social media handlers had reported that gunmen attacked a Guest House in Calabar, rob female occupants of valuables.
Contrary to the report, The Police said, “an account from the owner of the hotel, revealed that two armed men scaled through the fence of his guest house at about 1019hrs of 3rd October, 2025, forced their way into the room occupied by a man and his wife and dispossessed them of two mobile phones and a power bank.
It added that “upon receipt of the information by DPO of Efut division, the premises of the guest house was ransacked and one Emmanuel Ekpo aged 25, of No 16 Okurabor Street 8miles Calabar, who could not give visible account of while he was within the premises took to his heels.
“He was chased by the police and arrested, upon search of his person, two wraps of substance suspected to be India hemp were recovered from him,” adding that “he is currently helping police investigation,” part of the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River Command, CP Rashid Afegbua, further urged “members of the public to disregard the sensationalized social media report.”
He appealed to social media handlers to always get clarification from the police crime reports so as not to send wrong message to tourists and investors who know Cross River to be the most peaceful and safest state in the country.
Afegbua reiterated that the Police Command and other security agencies are committed to maintaining the status quo ante.
