The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Friday celebrated Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished Nigerian-American officer, who was recently elevated to the rank of Commodore in the United States Navy.
Commodore Ndukwe was appointed as Commodore, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60, and Commander, Task Force (CTF) 65, headquartered in Rota, Spain. In his new role, he will oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, further strengthening international maritime security and cooperation.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, who was so elated, described the promotion as a historic milestone that brings pride not only to Nigeria but also to the global naval community and Nigerians in the diaspora.
Ndukwe’s latest achievement adds to his trailblazing record in the U.S. Navy. In April 2021, he made history as the first Nigerian-American to command a guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97). His journey from the son of Nigerian immigrants to one of the highest-ranking officers in the U.S. Navy has been hailed as a remarkable story of resilience, professionalism, and excellence.

“NIDCOM is proud of Commodore Ndukwe’s accomplishments, which reflect the boundless potential of Nigerians across the world,” Dabiri-Erewa said in a congratulatory statement. “His promotion is not only a personal success but also a symbol of the positive impact of the Nigerian diaspora globally.”

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating and supporting Nigerians abroad who embody values of diligence, integrity, and hard work while contributing meaningfully to international development.
