The Management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has proscribed the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), UNICAL Chapter, over disregard of extant laws and matriculation oath.
The decision conveyed in a statement signed by the Registrar of the University, Dr. Chukwuka Icha, says the directive takes effect immediately.
It noted with displeasure LAWSAN’s reckless resort to social media, painting the University in bad light, and disregarding extant laws as well as the matriculation oath taken by every student.
The Management further frowned at such unethical display of insubordination and disobedience to constituted authority by students studying to become lawyers, advocates, and judges.
The current LAWSAN Executive Council, according to the statement, is directed “to immediately hand over official properties and documents to the Faculty Officer, Faculty of Law, and concentrate on their studies.”
Accordingly, the statement added that, “all law students are also warned to stay away from LAWSAN union activities, as Management will no longer tolerate any unethical behavior from them.
“Furthermore, no student or staff has the right to address the press, put up social media posts, or grant interviews to discuss University matters without express authorization from Management
“The proscription will remain in effect until further notice,” the statement disclosed.
