The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Tuesday announced that more than 2.6 million Nigerians have registered online in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), which is being conducted both online and in-person across the country.

The Commission also disclosed that no fewer than 72,000 have registered in person in the last five days.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Commission considered reports on the progress of the exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, with the introduction of online pre-registration, and August 25 for in-person registration.

According to a statement by National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, a total of 2,532,062 Nigerians pre-registered online within the first two weeks of the exercise, while 72,274 citizens registered in-person within just five days of commencement.

As of August 31, 2025, the Commission said that of the 2.5 million online pre-registrants, 1,218,482 (48.12%) were male and 1,313,580 (51.88%) were female.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for 1,602,484 (63.29%), while students made up 647,528 (25.57%) of the total figure.

INEC reiterated that the online registration process remains incomplete until applicants present themselves at designated centres across the country to have their fingerprints and facial biometric details captured.

“Without this step, the online process alone is invalid,” the Commission emphasized, urging all online registrants to complete their registration in person at its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide.

INEC also noted that the in-person option, which caters to Nigerians without internet access or those who prefer to register physically, has recorded strong participation since it began on August 25.

Within its first five days, 72,274 citizens completed registration, comprising 35,622 males (49.29%) and 36,652 females (50.71%).

A breakdown further shows that 54,718 registrants (75.71%) were aged 18 to 34, with 30,953 (42.83%) identified as students.

The Commission added that registration centres remain open across the country from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

INEC stated that detailed breakdowns of the registration figures by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status have been published on its official website and other platforms to ensure transparency.

The Commission expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their enthusiasm, as well as to civic organisations that have mobilised citizens to participate in the exercise.

“The positive response from citizens is encouraging, and we urge all those who have started the process online to complete it in-person to ensure their inclusion in the register,” the Commission said.
